So the general question I get from people needing time management advice is ‘How can I have more hours in the day?’
It’s so easy to feel like you don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done well. My answer is that we all have a certain amount of hours in the day, we’re all equal. I can’t give you any more hours, or even minutes, but what I can do as a Business Improvement Consultant is show you how to utilise the hours that you do have more effectively.
So, start to think about the time that you actually have. Generally when people say that they need more hours in the day they’re trying to do too much, and trying to fit too much into a day and can’t do it. Yes, we have lots of things to do but we actually need to really think clearly, and wisely about how we spend the time that we actually have. So when I’m asked how can you have more hours in the day – you can’t BUT let’s sit down together and look at what you’re doing. Let’s look at how you’re working. Let’s help you work smarter, not harder. Let’s make sure that your processes are as efficient as they can be. Let’s look at all the things that you’re trying to do, to try and make sure you’re doing them at the right time of day, in the right frame of mind, in the right mindset. If you’re doing things from an overwhelmed mindset of already thinking that you’ve got too much to do and you can’t fit it in, then of course you can’t fit it in.
Also, think about practicing a power hour. They’re so powerful. Even if all you have is half an hour you can start with that. The amount of work you do often expands to fill the time you’ve got available – if you have 10 things to do and you have 10 hours to do in you take 10 hours to do it. If you have 10 things to do and you have four hours available and you have to get them done – you do them. It’s all about the mindset of how much time you’ve got and making the best of what you’ve got.Try a power hour. It’s something that I would advocate doing regularly. Write a to list, turn off all distractions, turn off notifications and get them done.
So, the answer is I can’t give you more hours in the day but what I can give you are the tools to work more effectively in that day, the tools to recognise when you can work, how you should work, and to work to kind of, the better mindset and approaching things you’ve got to do better.-
