The Power of Visual Storytelling: Using Your Photos to Tell Your Story

When I say brand storytelling, you probably think about telling a story through words. But, in reality, there are so many different ways to tell your story, and make sure people actually remember you long after you’ve left the room or they’ve closed your website. 

It’s tough out there for freelancers and small businesses right now. You need to stand out, but that doesn’t have to mean being the biggest personality in the room (or having the loudest voice!). Your story is one of the most powerful sales and marketing tools you have. People buy from people – it’s a cliche for a reason! So, how do you tell your story?

What is visual storytelling?

Did you know that 65% of people are visual learners, meaning they remember information better when they see it in photo or video format, rather than written or spoken word. Think about the last time you networked for your business, how many people did you meet? And how many do you actually remember? I bet the most memorable are not those who talked the most or even the ones who gave out the most business cards… you probably remember the people who stood out visually. Perhaps they were wearing their brand colours or had a stand-out smile. They might have been kind to you in an intimidating room or connected with you in a one-to-one. 


Whatever they did to stick out in your mind, think about how they did it and let’s see how we can translate that into visual storytelling. 

You can’t be everywhere at once. So, while networking is a fantastic way to get your story out there, it’s not the only way. I work with owner-managed businesses to capture images of them doing what they do best. This photography can then be used across websites, social media, email newsletters and even print marketing to help them tell their stories. 

Finding your story

Although the word story implies the past, I think it’s better to think of visual storytelling as an all-encompassing look at you and your business. Your story might already be taking shape, or you may have no idea about where to start. Don’t worry, it’s easy to do.

Ask yourself the following questions to get the ball rolling:

What steps do you take for your clients/customers? 

If you are a baker, talk about everything from sourcing ingredients through to making the product and displaying it on your shelves. These images from Killingworth-based independent business Eli’s Bakery are the perfect example of this sort of visual storytelling.

Who are the key people in your business?

Visual storytelling won’t be as impactful without faces to names. If selfies aren’t your thing and you’re feeling a little camera-shy, then it’s time to give me a call.
