How to put your personal brand into words

I’m over the moon to be writing this piece for For You Photography all about putting your personal brand into words.

As you know, Lauren will help you discover and transform your personal brand through beautiful photography for businesses. Going hand in hand with the visual side of your business, you should aim to cover your personal brand in your writing, too. So, how do you do that?

Determine your brand values

As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you will already be living your brand values every day - even if you don’t know it. There are so many more complicated ways of finding out your brand values, but the simplest (and most effective) is to sit down with a piece of paper and write down words that you feel represent what’s important to you and your business.

It’s not just about what you think, either. You should aim to ask some of your team members and even your longterm customers about what they believe your values are.

For me at Content By The Sea, it’s about offering an honest and straightforward service. I take pride in being compassionate, empathetic and supportive. These values will help my customers understand what to expect from my service, and how they will be treated if they choose to work with me,

Writing a value proposition

Now you’ve got your brand values written down, it’s time to put these into a sentence or two that summarises what you deliver - this is your value proposition. Lead with your most important values: are you quick and efficient? Or do you take pride in a slow and more considered approach? Do you work with your clients in a collaborative way or can they expect the same service each time?

Look back

Take your new brand values and value proposition and have a look at your existing website copy, email newsletters, social media posts and any other written content you have previously used for your brand. Do you feel that you are already transmitting your brand values? Or is there more you can do to strengthen your brand through words?

Start writing

There’s no time like the present, so start using your new-found brand values and value proposition today. Re-write website copy and social media bios, if necessary, and remember to refer back to your research when writing anything new. The more you do it, the quicker it will become second nature!

Why is a personal brand important?

You might be reading this thinking you don’t have time to do this activity, but I highly recommend you make time to consider your personal brand at least every six months.

The more you use your personal brand, the stronger it will become. Your aim is to be the person that other people associate with your trade, so when the moment comes to use your services, they already know that you are the top choice.

Do you already know your brand values? Or are you just discovering the power of the personal brand? Let us know on Twitter! @ContentByTheSea @Lauren_fyp
